"There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then youve made a measurement. If the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you’ve made a discovery." This adage best fits EsPMATIC: Multimodal, Adaptive, Technological, Integrative Course of Learning for ESP Teachers. In the said 5-day training workshop, SDO Batangas Province greatly manifested the true meaning of innovation, where teachers of Senior High School conquered their inhibitions of becoming innovators and started to live in the true sense of the word - innovations make teaching and learning much easier. Using a transformational learning approach, EsPMATIC achieved its goals’ to inculcate multimodal, adaptive, technological, and integrative skills in teachers and use them in their own classroom teaching.
The first day of this five-day seminar started with an opening program facilitated by Maria Irma C. Cudiamat , Principal 1 of Look National High School, Nasugbu District. The Quality Policy Statement was read after the singing of the National Anthem, the Calabarzon March, and the Batangas Hymn.Dr. Mario B. Maramot, OIC Chief of Curriculum and Implementation Division, gave his welcome message, followed by the recognition of participants from each Congressional District.
Dr. Ma. Leticia provided the statement of purpose.Jose C. Basilan, EPS 1-ESP/Training Proponent. She mentioned the importance of the course for the participants to improve the teaching-learning process for the 21st century learner, specifically in Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao. Dr. Basilan introduced all members of the Program Management Team and Technical Working Group to recognize those who contribute to the seminar's success. She also mentioned the resource speakers for the five-day training. Lelizeil F. Javier, Principal 1, of Look Elementary School, introduced the program of activities, while the Sessions Protocols and House Rules were given by Dr. Albert M. De Chaves, Principal III of Talaibon Elementary School. Mathew Alliene D. Mendoza, Head Teacher I of Banoyo Integrated National High School, led the Leveling of Expectations.
After the preliminary activities, participants answered the pre-test composed of 30 items via a Google Form.
Lilizeil F. Javier introduced the first speaker. He is Dr. Dennis B. Masangcay, EPS 1, from DepEd Tanauan City, and his topic was Familiarization and Defamiliarization of Thinking Skills. He began his session by asking when the teacher was considered effective. Three of the participants shared their different ideas on what an effective teacher is. The speaker mentioned that according to a survey of students, an effective teacher makes lessons interesting, gives them a variety of activities to do, tells them when they have done well, and assists them when they ask for it.He also tackled learner-centered principles and emphasized that teaching must be nurtured and Filipinos must develop 21st century skills. Another highlight of his discussion is the thinking skills of the learners, which may result in cognitive learning at six levels based on motivational stimulation, meaningful engagement, inquisitive facilitation, and types of assessment. The difference between formative and summative tests was also clarified. He gave examples of assessment based on Bloom’s taxonomy, such as remembering, understanding, analyzing, applying, evaluating, and creating. After the discussion, participants were required to craft a 3DEE lesson plan and assessment tool as their outputs.
The second speaker, introduced by Matthew Alliene D. Mendoza, HT I, facilitated the afternoon session. He is Dr. Alfred James T. Ellar, Master Teacher 2 from Don Juan Pastor Memorial National High School, with his topic revisiting excellence in teaching through instructional strategies in EsP macro skills (ISEsP pedagogy). Before he proceeded with his discussion, he gave an activity entitled “Looking Beyond the Picture,” leading to the realization that it is the value that we perceive.
His discussion has two parts: Phase 1: Revisiting EsP Teaching Excellence; and Phase 2: Instructional Strategies for EsP Macro Skills. Under Phase 1, he discussed the dignity of EsP teachers, the target among EsP teachers as an inspirational leader, the 3Es of EsP teachers in SDO Batangas (excellence, empowerment, and efficiency), the philosophy of personalism, and the value-virtue algorithm. He presented yet another individual and group activity, such as grouping the words and reflecting on the statement.
Phase 2 of the discussion began with a group activity using meta cards, which was presented later by a group representative. His discussion centered on the MELC-EsP Macro Skill Framework, instructional strategy pillars (direct and indirect instruction, interactive instruction, experiential learning, independent study), EsP process approaches, and active learning participation. He also shared his knowledge on the different EsP output bases, such as concept-based output and action-based output. The last part of his discussion is about multidimensional analysis of ISEsP, followed by another group activity wherein each group is required to prepare a lesson exemplar based on IDEA phases. The group representative explained his or her group’s output. Before he ends, he asks the participants to share their realizations and reflections after such activities.
Day 2 of this five-day seminar is lighter than the first day. This time, willingness and excitement among the participants are noticeable. Participants are more responsive, and a lot of questions are being raised for clarification. New settings of chairs and tables surprised them.
While waiting for the start of the day's activities, the venue was filled with happenings such as: breakfast, a photo opportunity with Dr. Ma. Leticia C. Basilan, the sharing of first night experiences, and the preparation of materials to be used for the day’s activities by the TWG.
Day 2 activities started with the MOL (management of learning). Mylyn G. Sangalang, QAME, presented the results of the online evaluation from all participants. The total rate is 3.82, which is equivalent to "effective," and the most common comments or suggestions gathered are:
-Great training experience.
-Kudos to PMT and TWG and EsP family.
-I really like this session. Even though there are lots of assignments I really enjoyed the talk.
Mr. Philips T. Monterola talked about the IDEA Approaches Update and Other Approaches in Lesson Plan Preparation. The first thing he did was present the prayer in an audio-visual presentation entitled "Miracle,” which according to him had been his guiding prayer since he started teaching. From the prayer, he instilled that “a teacher is always a teacher." Before he proceeded to his topic, he asked, “What is a lesson plan for you?” which was answered using a link. Most of them responded that the lesson plan is the teacher’s bible, teacher’s guide, and daily plan for teaching. A video played, and he asked them to reflect on it. The flow of his discussion focuses on: DepEd’s mission, vision, and core values; DM #008 s 2023, which is about the current Class Observation Team (COT); 21st-century learning and innovation skills such as creativity, critical thinking, communication, character, and common sense; and communication and instruction 5.0.
The speaker also mentioned the new tagline of "DepEd Bansang Makabata/Batang Makabansa." The highlight of his discussion is the difference between DLL and IDEA-based lesson exemplars and how to prepare them by showing samples. On this topic, several questions and clarifications were raised by the participants. Activity on the preparation and presentation of a one-day lesson plan was also a part of his session. Before he ends his session, he inspires participants by showing a video narration and leaving a message that a video instills.
"Habang nagtatagal, lalong sumasaya," a phrase heard from Ma’am Irma as the class manager. Excitement among participants is more noticeable, maybe because they feel the good impact of the training and now they can adapt and respond to the flow and time pressure.
To begin the 3rd day’s activity, participants from Congressional District 4 led the MOL, which included the singing of the Makabayan Song, a prayer, recapitulation, and an energizer. A quiz using edpuzzle was done to test participants, knowledge of the past topics. The Ting Ting-Tang Tang Dance by the group, including the TWG, was the energizer for the day.
QAME reports were given by Lilizeil F. Javier. The overall rating based on the evaluations from the participants is 3.72, or effective. According to the greatest number of participants, innovation makes work easier, not a burden. Suggestions tallied from the responses are: have a little slower discussion and provide more time for the production of outputs.
Awarding for the early submission of outputs, prompt answering of evaluations, performer of the day, and Bibo Award followed after the QAME reports. Dr. Basilan shared some information regarding the course, the process to be followed after the training, the feedback from NEAP Monitor, and some reminders and suggestions for the participants. She relayed that according to Sir Alvin, training is okey, and it is very evident that NEAP standards were met: "sa toblerone pa lang kitang okey na."
On the fourth day, participants came with excitement since it was already the fourth day of the seminar and they had only one more day to go. Getting along with participants from other districts helps them acquire new friends.
The preliminary activities included awarding participants who demonstrated unique and best performances. The same awards as on Day 1 were given. QAME reports followed. The following are the results of the evaluation and the responses of the participants:
-Excellent speakers, innovative learnings.
-Everything went well . Kudos to excellent speaker.
-Nakakastress pero worth it dahil Maganda ang output, challenging and fighting.
-Making a website not just an output for today’s session but also a product of our labor that will benefit the learners, fellow teachers, the school, and the whole DepEd.
-The session has a total rating of 3.85 equivalent to effective.
To begin the session proper, Imelda H. De Sagun, HT III, introduced the speaker. Micah Joy L. Mita worked as a Teacher II for DepED Quezon Province. At first, Micah Joy L. Mitra, or MJ, as her friends call her, shared her experiences she encountered when she conducted ICT seminars or training in different provinces. She informed the participants of updates regarding Gmail, which are now creating worries among teachers. She mentioned that Google for Education remains committed to the Philippines, students, and the upskilling of teachers. She also shared how to become a Google Certified Trainer Levels 1 and 2.
One of the interesting topics she discussed was storage management using Google Drive, and she identified and demonstrated how to use each feature. How to recover files that have been accidentally unsaved or deleted.
She further imparted to participants the following concerns, facts, and features regarding Google Drive: how to create a school drive in which all files of the school can be saved; how to detect who opens and uses the drive; the difference between a get link and a share; and how to add an expiration date to a link. After she introduced each feature, she gave a few minutes to let the participants apply what she demonstrated and ensure that it was successfully done.
The speaker demonstrated how to use Google Photos and upload pictures, how to upload videos to YouTube, and what to do if somebody loses her device or cellphone using the Google application "Google find my device." Hands on workshop/discussion and interaction on creating a folder and then moving the EsPMATIC website and other collateral into it, as well as moving files created with one account to another.
The afternoon session is the continuation of the discussion and hands-on workshop about other features and applications on the school’s website. She emphasized the advantages of opening Google in Chrome rather than in Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox. She also demonstrated how to integrate some features, like a picture carousel, and how to customize buttons on the home page of the school's website.
"Uwian na last day."This was the noise being heard as everyone entered the new hall. Everyone was elegantly dressed as if it were their graduation day.
The QAME report was given by Mylyn G. Sangalang. She happily announced the result of the evaluation for the day: a total rating of 3.93. She enumerated the common comments from the participants:
-Napakahusay po ng speaker . Mahirap at madami ang na accomplish pero sulit na sulit po.
-She is excellent in her craft at napakahusay din ng kanyang connection sa mga participants. Natuto kami sa kanya.
-Lahat ng part na ipinakita ni Ma’am ay kapaki-pakinabang ,walang tapon.
-Iniisip ko pa lng na makagawa ng app dahil kay mam ay natupad na.
The preliminary activities included awarding participants who demonstrated unique and best performances. Awards like prompt submission of a screenshot of the mobile application of the school website, early submission of the session evaluation, best performer, and the most energetic group were given.
Following the awarding, the class manager called Micah Joy L. Mitra to continue her Google session. Before she proceeded to her main topic, she said that she was overwhelmed by the warm welcome and expressed her gratitude for the comments from the participants. She also gave some inspirational insights and outlooks on life. She emphasized that it’s okay to take a break as a form of self-care. According to her, we do not have to be online all the time. She mentioned her own version of giving herself care.
After that, she introduced her topic, which is Google Analytics. She gave the link and asked participants to open it. Then she explained and demonstrated the process, step by step, clearly. She makes sure that every participant can follow the instructions.
As she went along with her discussion, she relayed her experiences when she went to the Google Office. From then on, she realized that everything we search for on Google is being monitored. Before she ended her session, she shared a Google site (Twinkl.com.ph) that stores lots of learning materials and resources that are downloadable and printable. With her guidance, every participant was able to join and subscribe to the site.
Following the session with Ma'am Micha Joy, there was a presentation of the output by congressional district.Four EsPMATIC learning capsules were presented:
o CD 2 -Bauan Technical Integrated High School, Bauan District
